NetOne fed up with power struggle

25 Apr 2006

Zimbabwean mobile operator NetOne says it will import diesel generators to alleviate network failure spawned by incessant electricity power cuts, reports allAfrica.com. The country has over the past year been facing power shortages due to lack of foreign currency to import power and expand local generating capacity. NetOne added that: ‘The main challenge we have is shortage of foreign currency to upgrade capacity and to purchase new base station equipment for rollout and alleviation of congestion.’ However, it also said that it had managed to install GSM-1800 base stations in addition to its current GSM-900 infrastructure in Harare and Bulawayo to increase capacity and ease congestion. NetOne had a subscriber base of 210,000 at the end of March 2006.
