According to BNamericas, América Móvil (AM) is in talks to buy Entel, Chile’s second largest telco, from the Almendral holding group. The Mexico-based giant already has a foothold in the Chilean market after acquiring the country’s third largest cellco Smartcom for USD472 million in August 2005. If the deal goes through, América Móvil would leapfrog Telefónica-owned Móvistar as the mobile market leader. The combined entity would almost certainly need to return some of its spectrum to the regulator SeCom.
