UPC Broadband rolls out Nortel VoIP solution for triple-play in Europe

21 Apr 2006

UPC Broadband, a division of international cable operator Liberty Global, has rolled out Nortel’s cable VoIP solution to provide a suite of enhanced voice services to residential customers in the Netherlands, France and Austria. UPC, whose networks pass more than eleven million homes and businesses in western Europe, is using Nortel equipment as part of its strategy to offer triple-play services over a single network.

Over the past 15 months UPC’s telephony deployment has doubled and it has now signed its one millionth VoIP customer. UPC is also one of the first cable operators to deploy Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) news alert-based VoIP services, laying the foundation for new, feature-rich voice and multimedia services, such as presence, instant messaging and video and mobility, and taking the first step towards the converged services.
