Spain’s Telefónica Group has contracted Lucent Technologies as its main supplier for the roll out of IPTV services across its operations worldwide. Under the terms of the deal, Lucent will be responsible for all aspects of Telefónica’s Imagenio IPTV middleware platform, including development, deployment and marketing. It will also take charge of its active end-to-end, multi-vendor IPTV solutions in Brazil, Chile, the Czech Republic and Spain. Lucent will also create several IPTV research centres across Latin America.
Meanwhile, in its domestic market Telefónica de España has informed Spain’s Service for the Defence of Competition (SDC) that it is still looking to acquire exclusive control of rival broadband operator Iberbanda. In January the country’s antitrust court, the TDC, recommended that Telefónica should not be allowed to acquire Iberbanda lest it be detrimental to competition. Despite being a relatively minor broadband player, Iberbanda is a Spanish leader in the development of WiMAX and the court was wary of Telefónica dominating the market for the fledgling technology. Telefónica originally struck a deal with Iberbanda shareholders in August 2005 and is now looking to resurrect the acquisition.
