According to reports in Bloomberg, Japan’s largest phone operator NTT could be ‘abolished as a holding company’ under proposals put forward by a government-backed advisory panel to promote competition in the industry. The panel, formed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, is considering ways to level the playing field to help NTT rivals such as Softbank Corp to better compete in the domestic market. Plans under consideration are thought to include the possible spinning off of NTT’s fibre-optic network access unit and/or the restriction of the use of the NTT brand.
