Netcom adds a million broadband users in 1Q

China Netcom has reported first quarter revenue of CNY20.99 billion, an increase of almost 5% on the same period of 2005. The number of broadband customers jumped to 12.56 million, an increase of 1.08 million in three months while the number of fixed line telephony customers rose by 2.7 million to 118 million. According to the company’s chairman, Zhang Chunjiang, Netcom will continue to invest heavily in high growth businesses such as broadband during the course of 2006.

In a separate announcement Netcom revealed it will join hands with UTStarcom to deploy an IPTV network in the northeastern city of Harbin. The contract is based on a commercial trial launched in May last year which had an initial capacity of 100,000 users.
