According to the Colombian telecommunications regulator the number of wireless subscribers in the country rose to 25 million at the end of March 2006, an annual increase of 33.3%. America Movil is the largest operators with 15.9 million, followed by Movistar with 6.8 million and Colombia Movil (Ola) with 2.3 million.
In a separate announcement, Telefonica CEO Cesar Alierta has flown to Colombia to sign the agreement to buy fixed line incumbent Colombia Telecom. According to the Spaniard, rolling out broadband will be top priority for Colombia Telecom, with Telefonica promising to invest up to USD670 million in the company over the next three and a half years.
