SmarTone demonstrates HSDPA

19 Apr 2006

Hong Kong-based cellco SmarTone-Vodafone yesterday carried out Hong Kong’s first live public trial of high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) mobile technology at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair. The trial delivered download speeds of up to 1.8Mbps, around five times faster than SmarTone’s existing W-CDMA network. The operator said that the HSDPA network will be upgraded with future technologies to eventually offer download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. It expects to launch commercial HSPDA services in late 2006 or early 2007, and plans to offer a range of HSDPA-enabled data cards, PDAs and smartphones.
