Increased competition hits Indosat user base

18 Apr 2006

Indonesian mobile operator Indosat has reported a near 12% drop in subscribers in the first quarter of the year, to around 12.67 million, down from 14.4 million at the end of 2005. Indosat President Hasnul Suhaimi blamed the drop on rising inflation and a government ruling that obliges pre-paid cell phone users to register themselves. Despite the setback the company is confident it will achieve its target growth of adding between three to four million new users in 2006. According to the government, the number of cell phone users in the country stood at 50.6 million as of 14 April 2006.
