BSNL plans to launch its own international long-distance (ILD) operations by the end of July 2006. The telco obtained an ILD licence in 2003, and has already been routing calls to Nepal via its own network that extends to the Indo-Nepal border. Bangladesh will be added in a month’s time, while global operations via undersea cables will begin by June or July. BSNL will not only route all its international calls through its own network, it will also compete with VSNL for India’s INR4,200 crore (USD920 million) ILD business. Although the move is a blow for VSNL – currently 30%-40% of BSNL’s ILD traffic goes through VSNL’s network – officials at the company stated that they have been preparing for BSNL’s entry to the ILD market for the last two years.
