Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) has announced a strong start to 2006 with a net profit of BHD23.5 million (USD62.4 million) in the first quarter, an increase of 3.5% versus Q1 2005. Batelco is continuing to focus on developing its mobile and broadband business. Its mobile customer base reached 580,000 at the end of March, a market share of around 75%; sole cellular competitor MTC-Vodafone had 202,000 subscribers at the end of December. To encourage high speed internet take-up in Q1, Batelco reduced entry level business broadband tariffs by 50% to BHD40 per month. The telco has also entered the network solutions and systems integration market, offering converged data and telephony solutions to corporate clients.
