MTN to extend network and distribution channels

10 Apr 2006

Mobile operator MTN Zambia has contracted Harris Corporation to design, build and install microwave infrastructure for its national GSM network. Harris will deploy its TRuepoint radio system to construct a new network backbone, metro rings and access links connecting MTN Zambia’s network. The new links will enhance capacity around Zambia’s capital city, Lusaka, and one of its largest commercial towns, Kitwe, and form the first stage of a wider project to interconnect all towns and cities in the country. The cellco also plans to extend its sales and distribution network and is looking to tie-up deals with local businesses for the resale of handsets, SIM cards and talk time; it will open five new retail outlets in the coming fortnight.
