The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation’s (ETC) three-year project to provide telecoms services to 15,000 rural settlements is 90% complete, according to a report in The Ethiopian Herald. The ETB5.2 billion (USD5.99 million) project is part of government plans to expand communications services to the 85% of the population living in outlying areas, many of whom have to travel up to 50km to access a telephone. In addition, ETC says it is providing broadband internet services to around 17,500 customers in eight towns and cities, including Addis Ababa.
