Bouygues begins belated drive to 3G

5 Apr 2006

French cellco Bouygues Telecom has confirmed a newspaper report stating that it had selected Nortel and Ericsson to construct its 3G network. Despite winning a 3G licence in 2002, Bouygues chose not to launch next generation services at the same time as rivals Orange and SFR, preferring instead to deploy EDGE and wait until W-CDMA infrastructure was less costly. Under the terms of its licence Bouygues must roll out a 3G network to reach 20% of the population by April 2007.
