Virgin birth in France

4 Apr 2006

Virgin Mobile and Carphone Warehouse have confirmed plans for a nationwide MVNO in France. The virtual network operator – which will take the Virgin brand – will use the network of Orange France. The assets and customers of Carphone Warehouse’s existing French operation, Omer Telecom, will be included in the joint venture. Virgin chief Sir Richard Branson told a news conference in Paris that Virgin Mobile France is aiming to become the fourth largest operator with one million customers in the next three years. The operator will adopt a similar ‘youth-targeted’ strategy to the one it uses already in the UK, US, Australia and Canada. Branson went on to express his desire to shake-up the French mobile industry, saying: “In France, the existing operators defend their interests and consumers have lost confidence in them. We want to offer an alternative, an operator that doesn’t work against its customers, but with them.”
