O2 wins GBP350m emergency services contract

UK cellco O2 has secured a GBP350 million (USD609 million) contract to provide a digital radio system for the country’s emergency fire services. The contract has been handed to O2’s Airwave unit, which currently supplies a similar service to the police and ambulance services. Roll out of the new radio system, which will be both voice and data capable, will begin in the second half of this year and is scheduled to be complete in 2007.
