TNL PCS (Oi) awards Huawei GSM expansion contract

28 Mar 2006

Brazilian mobile operator TNL PCS (Oi), which is owned by Telemar Norte Leste, has awarded Huawei Technologies a GSM network expansion contract, augmenting a long-term partnership between the pair. Oi launched commercial services in June 2002 and is the leading GSM operator in Brazil. Like Telemig/Amazônia Celular, it boasts a substantial client base — 10.3 million at the end of 2005 – but is somewhat limited in scope as a result of its lack of geographical coverage. At launch it was available in 16 states in Region I, but by 2006 it had expanded coverage to Regions III, IV, XIII, IX and X.
