DoCoMo applies for permit for WiMAX trial

28 Mar 2006

Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo has submitted an application to the regulator for a permit to conduct experimental outdoor wireless test of WiMAX – the wide-area wireless broadband network technology based on the IEEE 802.16e standard. DoCoMo will carry out a one-year pilot trial of WiMAX in the Yoyogi area of Tokyo, using the 2.5GHz frequency band. The cellco is hoping to assess the possibility of interference from existing satellite communication systems such as Wide Star. It is also working towards confirming continuous connections during handover within the WiMAX system or between WiMAX and other systems such as HSDPA.
