VoIP blocked ‘til 2008

According to Wang Leilei, the head of Tom Online, the Chinese internet portal which has a joint venture with Skype, the Chinese government is not likely to sanction VoIP services until 2008. The news will be a disappointment to Skype, which had hoped to clear the way for the launch of its computer-to-telephone service, known as SkypeOut, much sooner. Skype currently offers a free computer to computer telephony service to its nine million users in China, although calls are limited to five minutes.
