According to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), mobile phone shipments in Japan reached 3.5 million during January 2006, up 11.4% from January 2005. More than 80% were 3G handsets, as sales of next generation phones during the month soared 27.1% to 2.8 million, more than off-setting the 36.9% decline in 2G units to 559,000. Despite two of the three existing Japanese PHS operators no longer taking new customers, PHS shipments increased almost 200% to 129,000.
