Epec and Comarcoop to launch mobile services?

14 Mar 2006

Power company Epec and mobile venture Comarcoop are currently in negotiations over a possible mobile launch in the country, according to local newspaper La Nacion. Comarcoop, a venture between a group of local telephony cooperatives, asked the regulator if it can purchase 42.5MHz of spectrum which existing operator Movistar is required to return to the authorities; CTI Movil, the local unit of Mexico’s America Movil, has also expressed an interest in obtaining the spectrum. Epec launched public telephony, call centre and prepaid calling card telephony services in 2004. As well as the mobile venture, it also plans to roll out broadband internet access using power line communications.
