KDDI completes WiMAX field trial

13 Mar 2006

Japanese telecoms operator KDDI has completed a trial of the country’s first mobile WiMAX system, in central Osaka. The system, which is based on the IEEE802.16e, standard, provided successful connectivity of mobile WiMAX to ‘Ultra 3G,’ and of ‘Ultra 3G’ to EV-DO and ADSL platforms. The ‘Ultra 3G’ trial system was also connected via WiMAX to a MultiMedia Domain (MMD) application server via an IPv6 network. KDDI aims to launch mobile WiMAX in the future, although as yet no timetable has been given.
