Econet expects to sign up half a million

13 Mar 2006

Econet Wireless is reportedly on course to surpass its target of 500,000 subscribers ahead of its scheduled date of June 2006. Insiders say that the Zimbabwean mobile market leader might have already achieved its goal following a recent sales campaign for its Buddie pre-paid brand. Prior to the issuing of new pre-paid lines in the first quarter of this year, Econet claimed 412,197 customers, over 53% of the market. After failing to achieve its previous aim of signing up 500,000 subscribers by December 2005, chairman Tawanda Nyambirai reported that the company had set its sights on utilising its full half-million GSM network capacity by June.
