Softbank could lose mobile licence if Vodafone acquisition goes through

10 Mar 2006

The government of Japan may revoke Softbank Corp’s recently awarded mobile licence if it decides to purchase UK-based Vodafone Group’s Japanese subsidiary Vodafone KK. Broadband and fixed line services provider Softbank was given the licence in November as part of state plans to improve competition in the domestic market for the first time in twelve years. However, the administrative vice-minister at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Shoko Hayashi, has gone on record as saying it would ‘take appropriate measures’ if Softbank agreed to buy Vodafone KK.
