Bermuda Digital Communications, which operates under the CellularOne brand, added around 2,600 subscribers in 2005 to end the year with 22,600 customers.
CellularOne rolled out an AMPS network in July 1999, and upgraded to TDMA in January 2001. In 2003 it added a CDMA2000 1XRTT overlay and in June 2004 called on Lucent – via its associate Commnet Supply – to deploy CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology. As part of the agreement BDC is upgrading its existing Lucent Flexent base stations to the higher speed technology. EV-DO services were launched commercially in April 2005, with island-wide coverage. CellularOne is 44% owned by Atlantic Tele-Network (ATN), a St Thomas, US Virgin Islands-based telecoms investment company whose principal subsidiary is Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T).
