22.7 million mobiles by end-January

According to local statistics bureau Indec, the total number of mobile phone subscribers in Argentina stood at 22.7 million at the end of January 2006, up 62.2% from 14 million a year earlier, with mobile traffic increasing by 46.3% year-on-year. Indec also reported 8.75 million fixed lines in service at the end of January, an increase of 0.5% in the year. Local traffic grew by 6.9% during the same period, while domestic long distance calls increased 29.7% and the number of public phones rose by 0.5% to 157,700.
