InvestCom awards Afghani contract

3 Mar 2006

Beirut-based telecoms investment company InvestCom has selected Ericsson as its principal supplier of GSM900/1800 network equipment for its Afghani licensee. InvestCom, which secured one of two new licences in Afghanistan last September as part of a 60/40 partnership with the UAE’s Alokozay FZE, hopes to be in a position to launch commercially by mid-2006. The company will operate under the brandname Areeba and will compete against two incumbent wireless operators – Telecom Development Company Afghanistan (TDCA) and Afghan Wireless Communications Company (AWCC) – as well as fellow newcomer Watan Mobile, an Afghan/Saudi/US partnership.
