go mobile launches EDGE services

3 Mar 2006

Maltese wireless operator MobIsle Communications, which operates under the brand go mobile, has announced the launch of EDGE based services, using equipment supplied by Nortel Networks. The launch enables the cellco to begin offering high bandwidth applications like video streaming.

MobIsle Communications was set up on 2 June 1999 as the second mobile operator in a fiercely competitive market previously exclusively dominated by Vodafone. After obtaining a licence on 19 September 2000, MobIsle Communications officially launched as go mobile on 1 December 2000. Within five years of operation, go mobile managed to gain close to 50% of market, with a subscriber base of in excess of 140,000 customers. The company claims to have invested more than USD55 million in its network to date.
