MTS goes long-distance

2 Mar 2006

Russia’s largest cellular operator MTS has applied for a licence to launch long-distance services via its sister company Sistema Telecom. Prime Tass quotes MTS press officer Galina Istratova, who says: “Obtaining this licence will help us optimise our costs for building our network infrastructure and reduce our operating costs. We will carry out the future development of mobile and fixed-line networks with other companies of Sistema Telecom.” Vimpelcom, MTS’ closest rival in the Russian mobile market, received a long-distance concession in December.
