DCC’s D-AMPS subscriber base dwindling fast as users flock to GSM

Ukrainian mobile operator Digital Cellular Communications of Ukraine (DCC) has reported that users of its D-AMPS mobile services fell to just 42,700 at the end of December 2005, down from 85,000 a year earlier. DCC merged with GSM operator Astelit in December 2003 and re-launched GSM/GPRS/EDGE services under the brand name life:) in January 2005. life:) has since grown at a rapid pace, signing up 2.46 million customers in its first year. DCC is wholly owned by Euroasia Telecommunication Holdings, itself 52.35% owned by Turkish cellco Turkcell, which purchased its stake in April 2004 for EUR42 million. Ukraine’s System Capital Management holds a 45% stake in Euroasia. Astelit is 99% owned by DCC.
