Mobile users reach 12.5 million, fixed lines rise 9%

Venezuala’s telecoms regulator Conatel has reported that the number of mobile subscribers in the country reached 12.5 million at the end of 2005, a 40% increase on the end-2004 total of 8.945 million. The net increase of over 3.5 million users is the largest since mobile services were launched, boosting cellular penetration to 46%. According to Conatel, Venezuela’s mobile operators posted combined operating revenues of VEB10.5 trillion (USD4.9 billion) last year, up 42% on 2004’s total, whilst investing VEB1.64 trillion (USD765 million). 304,000 new fixed lines were installed in the country during the year, raising the total number of lines to 3.6055 million, up by 9.1% on the 2004 total.
