Telstra to decommission up to 5,000 pay phones, reports say

21 Feb 2006

Australian incumbent Telstra is mulling the disconnection of 5,000 of its 32,000 public pay phones, according to local media reports. Officially, Telstra will remove 950 of its pay phones over the coming twelve months, but some sections of the press believe the telco is planning on decommissioning as many as five-times that number in a bid to cut costs. Telstra representatives are due to meet Communications Minister Helen Coonan to discuss the issue as part of its universal service obligation in the coming weeks.
