Sistema to bid for third mobile licence

17 Feb 2006

Russia’s AFK Sistema is the latest bidder to throw its hat into the ring ahead of the forthcoming sale of Egypt’s third mobile licence. Earlier this week Egypt’s Ministry of Communications (MoC) confirmed that it will launch a tender for the GSM concession on 17 April. Etisalat of the UAE has already confirmed that it intends to bid and it is expected to face competition from Kuwait’s MTC and South Africa’s MTN, as well as Telecom Egypt. Vodafone Egypt and Orange subsidiary MobilNil currently have a duopoly in the country’s wireless market, sharing around 13 million subscribers between them.
