eircom interested in acquiring disputed 3G licence

17 Feb 2006

eircom is interested in purchasing Ireland’s last 3G mobile licence if Smart Telecom fails in its attempts to hang on to the concession. The operator’s chief executive Phil Nolan confirmed that the company would pursue the concession should Smart fail, having failed in the original tender held last year. eircom and Irish mobile operator Meteor Mobile, which it now owns, both bid for the 3G licence in 2005, but lost out to Smart Telecom which has no mobile division. Securing the final 3G licence would help eircom move from the pre-paid market – Meteor’s current strategic focus – into the more lucrative post-pay segment.
