The directors of Macedonian telcos Makedonski Telekomunikacii (MT) and MobiMak will this month adopt plans to re-brand the companies to reflect their strategic tie-up with Deutsche Telekom (DT). GSM network operator MobiMak, the mobile arm of MT, will be renamed T-Mobile Macedonia in July, and in January 2007 the fixed line operator will take on the name T-Com Macedonia.
MT is owned by Stonebridge Communications (51%), the state (47.1%+ 1 golden share) and IFC (1.9%). Stonebridge Communications is wholly owned by Magyar Telekom which entered into an agreement with CosmoTelco in October 2004 regarding the latter’s 7.44% stake in Stonebridge. Magyar Telekom is itself part owned by German giant DT through MagyarCom Holding. DT’s decision to enter the Macedonian is the result of the country acquiring candidacy status for EU membership.
