Softbank holds talks with Vodafone over mobile tie-up

9 Feb 2006

Japanese internet and broadband provider Softbank Corp is in talks with Vodafone Group of the UK over plans to lease network capacity from the operator when it enters the mobile market next year. Softbank had planned to expand its services organically from urban centres, due to the limited number of base stations it can build, but now says it hopes to use Vodafone’s network in areas where it will have no coverage. The tie-up would give the ISP a useful leg-up, enabling it to offer nationwide services from the outset, posing a very real threat to the competition given its previous record on offering cut-price services.
