Omnitel, Bite and Tele2 win 3G licences

Lithuania’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has awarded three 3G licences to existing mobile operators Omnitel, Bite and Tele2. The public tender for the concessions opened on 17 November 2005 with bids for the 20-year licences carrying a minimum price of LTL3.5 million (EUR1.1 million). Omnitel has said it will launch 3G services in eight cities across the country, and will reveal detailed rollout plans on 23 February. At the end of September 2005 Omnitel was the leading operator with 40% of subscribers, while Bite had 33% and Tele2 26.1%.
