Mobile subscribers pass 1.5 million in 2005

Panama had 1.588 million mobile subscribers at the end of 2005, up 26% on the previous year, according to BNamericas quoting Costa Rican daily Capital Financiero. Cable & Wireless Móvil (CWP) and TEM Panama (formerly BellSouth Panama) control an almost equal share of the mobile market Capital Financiero said, citing statistics from Panama’s telecoms regulator ERSP. CWP had approximately 800,000 clients at year end, whilst TEM boasted 788,200 customers. In the fixed line sector, CWP’s parent Cable & Wireless (C&W) increased its subscriber base 28.6% year-on-year to 450,000.
