Telkom’s mobile arm Telekomunikasi Selular is one of four companies that have pre-qualified to bid for a 3G licence in Indonesia. The other successful applicants at this stage are PT Indosat, the country’s second largest telecoms operator, PT Bakrie Telecom and PT Excelcomindo Pratama, which is controlled by Telekom Malaysia. The government will offer two or three licences and the winners will be decided on 8 February. The starting price for the 5MHz frequency blocks on offer is set at USD11 million. ‘The winning bidders must commit to having presence in at least two provinces and providing 10% nationwide coverage in the first year,’ said a spokesman for the telecoms ministry.
