Vietnam invites bids for satellite project

2 Feb 2006

Vietnam will formally invite bidders for the construction of the country’s first satellite, Vinasat, this month, outlining plans for a launch in 2008. State-owned Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corp (VNPT) said it is currently preparing an open tender for the project which will be launched before the end of February. In 2004 four candidates – Russia’s NPoPM, European consortium Astrium (EADS)/ Alcatel Espace, US-based Lockheed Martin and US/Japanese consortium NEC-Toshiba-Orbital Science Corp – showed an interest in building the satellite; the project has been delayed several times due to difficulties in coordinating frequencies with other satellites already in orbit.
