Unicom switches investment preferences

30 Jan 2006

China Unicom plans to increase investment in its GSM network to CNY12.4 billion in 2006, while reducing the investment in its CDMA network to CNY2.7 billion. According to reports in the Chinese press, in 2005 Unicom invested approximately CNY40 billion, most of which went into its CDMA network expansion. Its adjusted investment plan is mainly the result of the disappointing performance of its CDMA operation; in 2005 it added 10.81 million GSM subscribers and just 4.91 million CDMA subscribers. Its total subscriber number reached 127.79 million at the end of the year, with 95.07 million GSM subscribers and 32.72 million CDMA subscribers.
