26 Jan 2006

An official for Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat) has told Reuters that the UAE company plans to bid for Egypt’s third mobile licence. Earlier this month Etisalat CEO Mohammad Omran told Egypt’s business daily Al Alam Al Youm that the company was looking to form a partnership with a local investor to bid for the concession. In July 2005 Egyptian communications minister Tarek Kamal confirmed that a third wireless licence covering both 2G and 3G technologies will be put out to tender; the sale is expected to take place in the first half of 2006 and the ministry anticipates that the new network will be up and running by late 2006/early 2007.
