At least 27 companies, including BT, France Télécom and state-owned telecoms operators from all over Africa, have announced plans to spend USD200 million in an undersea cable system. The proposed 8,000km Eastern African Submarine Cable System (EASSy) will improve the lot of 15-20 countries along Africa’s eastern seaboard offering cheaper telecoms and internet services by the end of 2007. EASSy is the result of a major collaboration in the region which includes all the state-owned and some private operators in Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Madagascar, Sudan, Tanzania, South Africa and Burundi.
