SFR selects SDC’s digital rights management solution for mobile music service

24 Jan 2006

French mobile operator Société Française de Radiotéléphone (SFR) has selected Secure Digital Container (SDC) of Switzerland to provide it with a digital rights management (DRM) solution, enabling it to launch a new subscription-based music download service for full length tracks at Midem 2006. SDC, a leading provider of ‘label-approved’ technology for DRM, has partnered Openwave Systems’ unit Musiwave, a leading provider of mobile music entertainment services to operators and media companies around the globe. According to SFR, the new service is based on a monthly subscription and ‘Purchase Rental’ licence models, meaning that consumers can download as many tracks as they want for a single monthly subscription fee. The user effectively buys the rights to use the tracks for one month, and those rights are rescinded if the user terminates their subscription
