Batelco earmarks diverse investments on back of climbing profits

24 Jan 2006

Bahraini telecoms group Batelco posted net profit for 2005 of BHD87.5 million (USD232.2 million), up 6% from BHD82.6 million the previous year, on revenues that rose 4% year-on-year to BHD211.6 million (USD561.5 million), in spite of increasing competition in its local and regional markets. In its annual report, the telco sets out investment plans for 2006, including BHD21 million earmarked for national broadband development and BHD17 million to upgrade its mobile network to improve coverage in buildings and remote areas, and increase voice and data capacity. The company has also invested ‘tens of millions’ in Flag Telecom’s FALCON cable system, aiming to significantly improve the speed and reliability of international internet and data services. Other projects that Batelco is focusing on include the expansion of its MPLS networks, data centres and VoIP services.
