24 Jan 2006

ISP AOL UK has revealed plans to invest up to GBP120 million (USD215 million) in local loop unbundling (LLU) to provide for the rollout of advanced broadband services, including VoIP and video-on-demand (VoD). An initial GBP50 million will be spent in the first six months of 2006 to install equipment in 300 exchanges in the UK’s largest cities, covering up to 20% of households in the country. If all is successful the second phase will include the upgrade of 1,000 more exchanges covering half the population. All of the upgraded exchanges will be made ADSL2+ capable.
