MII confirms TD-SCDMA choice

23 Jan 2006

The Ministry of the Information Industry (MII) has been reported by Xinhua news agency as confirming that the home grown 3G technology TD-SCDMA has been selected as a ‘national standard’ and that network construction will begin shortly. Although the news that China is endorsing its own standard comes as no surprise, the announcement could signal that the ministry is ready to begin awarding much anticipated 3G licences, possibly with the domestic standard being given a headstart over the two other technologies – WCDMA and CDMA-2000.
