Namibian SMS traffic doubles; cellco plans further investment

Namibia’s sole mobile operator, Mobile Telecommunications (MTC), reported that its SMS text traffic increased by 85% in December compared to the previous year, whilst it saw a 111% year-on-year rise in SMS in 2005 overall. MTC’s director Bengt Strenge said that the cellco invested over NAD700 million (USD117 million) in its network over the past ten years and plans to invest another NAD300 million to boost coverage and capacity. Strenge added that MTC will introduce new mobile packages in 2006.
