Telkom privatisation to be delayed

17 Jan 2006

According to Kenya’s Communications Minister Mutahi Kagwe, the planned privatisation of state-owned Telkom Kenya could be delayed because the government lacks the necessary funds to pay off workers and carry out reforms. The announcement puts Kenya at risk of losing a KES30 billion World Bank loan. Kagwe said the government was still looking at ways to raise funds to enable the sale to go ahead.
