VNPT plans satellite launch for 2008

12 Jan 2006

State-owned telco Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corp (VNPT) has said that it will begin the bidding process for construction of the country’s first satellite, Vinasat, in February, outlining plans for a launch in 2008. The company has refused to provide any further details on the process, citing national security, but according to local newspaper Tuoi Tre, the satellite will cost around USD183 million, and will have 20 transmitters. Vietnam currently rents satellite transmission services from Thailand, Indonesia and Russia to transmit television and radio services. The launch of Vinasat, which will be in orbit for 15 years, is expected to save the country around USD10 million a year.
